Dive Brief:
-
Sears Canada has picked up distribution of two popular Target clothing brands — Cherokee and Liz Lange maternity — and will begin selling them next year, the retailer says.
-
Sears Canada has also inked an exclusive deal to sell an apparel menswear line, from business attire to casual wear, by hockey star Wayne Gretzky.
-
The Canadian retailer has been struggling and has been unable to escape the troubles of U.S. parent Sears Holding Co.
Dive Insight:
Target’s hasty exit from Canada may be a boon for Sears Canada, and the clothing from Wayne Gretzky could also help sales in a country where hockey is practically a religion. But, as with the problems at Sears stores in the U.S., these positive moves may not be enough to help the retailer rise above its falling sales and increasing debt.
