Dive Brief:
-
Amazon aims to boost its same-day delivery services in the New York City area by adding another fulfillment center in New Jersey.
-
The company announced it will open a one million square-foot fulfillment center in Carteret, NJ, in July.
-
The retail giant already runs a similar center in nearby Robbinsville, and a 280,000 square-foot warehouse in Woodbridge to service its AmazonFresh operations.
Dive Insight:
As retailers increasingly leverage their physical stores to bolster their e-commerce logistics, same-day delivery becomes more entrenched as a consumer expectation. As the retailer that started it all, Amazon is now no longer just disrupting this aspect of retail, but must also now keep up with the competition.
Look for more expansion in Amazon’s fulfillment capacity nationwide, plus more scrutiny of those jobs as minimum wage and working conditions continue to be a focus for workers and their advocates.
