Dive Brief:
- Macy’s plans to move its West Sacramento, Calif.-based fulfillment operations to a larger, 385,000-sq.-ft. facility about 10 miles away.
- The department store’s omnichannel strategy has been successful in driving growth in direct-to-consumer shipments.
- Pending approval from Sacramento County, the new fulfillment center will open this summer and add about 100 jobs to the current facility’s staffing of 72.
Dive Insight:
An aggressive omnichannel strategy is paying off for Macy’s, which must battle online-only shopping sites such as Amazon, Zappos, and Overstock.com for consumer dollars, as well as fellow bricks-and-mortar legacy stores such as Nordstrom and H&M. And in today’s retail marketplace, that usually means matching them for speed and order accuracy.
Buoyed by its success in attracting online and mobile shoppers, Macy’s new facility will be four times the size of its current California fulfillment center, and include upgraded equipment and systems to ensure that customers in the Western United States receive their orders fast.
