Macy’s is in the process of closing 14 stores this year, part of the downsizing plan announced two years ago that is key to the turnaround led by Macy’s Inc. CEO Tony Spring.
The ongoing review of the store fleet entails “careful decisions about where and how we invest, including closing underproductive stores and streamlining operations,” Spring said in a memo to employees Thursday that has been made public.
“These targeted changes allow us to focus where it will have the greatest impact – reimagining our best stores, enhancing customer service, expanding our luxury business, and advancing our supply chain capabilities,” he said.

Most of the locations will shutter in Q1, including two in California; two in New Jersey; and one each in Georgia, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington. Another, in the Buffalo area of New York, will close mid-year.
The list includes one small format store, in Ramsey, New Jersey, and a clearance furniture store in Tukwila, Washington. Two other Macy’s locations in Tukwila — a full-line store and a furniture store — will remain open.
The closure of the Ramsey location is a shift from an expansion of the smaller format envisioned by Macy’s previous CEO, Jeff Gennette, whom Spring replaced in 2024.
In his memo, Spring said decisions to close stores “are not made lightly,” but emphasized the superior results where the company has focused its resources. Last year Macy’s posted its strongest Q3 comps in three years, led by stores slated to remain, where comps rose 2.3%, and revamped stores, where comps rose 2.7%. Overall in the period, Macy’s net sales fell 2.3%, with comps up 2%.
Investment in the revamped locations has led to stark improvements in merchandising and customer service, as at Macy’s State Street flagship in Chicago, according to Evercore ISI analysts, who have been checking in on the store for 15 years. “The changes the company is making today are driving more positive progress than any point we can remember over those 15 years,” they said in a research note last month.
On Thursday Spring thanked affected employees, who are receiving support, including transfer opportunities where available and severance and outplacement resources where applicable.
“We have made meaningful progress and remain clear-eyed about the work ahead,” he also said.
