Ahead of the July 4 travel weekend, Amazon and J.C. Penney have announced savings opportunities tied to gas consumption.
Consumer sentiment in recent months has hit record lows as the Iran war led to higher gas prices, though that has recently lifted as prices have settled down.
“Affordability is still the top issue for most Americans, but they have noticed improvement at the pump,” Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, said in emailed comments. “Inflation expectations remain elevated, but it’s notable that people aren’t as worried about inflation as they were a year ago when widespread tariffs were first announced.”
At Amazon, the savings are limited to members of its paid Prime loyalty program using certain gas stations. For the Independence Day weekend, from Thursday through Sunday, Prime members can save 50 cents per gallon on one fuel purchase at more than 7,500 BP, Amoco, and participating AMPM and Thorntons locations.
J.C. Penney’s fuel deal is open to any customer who brings in a receipt from any gas station. In exchange for the receipt, on Friday only, customers will receive $10 off a $10 purchase.
These promotions come as gas prices are the lowest they’ve been in a while.
Average gasoline prices fell in 46 states over the last week, helping push average gas prices down by nearly 7 cents to $3.78 per gallon, the lowest since March, according to a GasBuddy report Monday. That could spike in the coming days in some areas, according to the report.
