Dive Brief:
- Gap is bringing together on-the-rise talent from the worlds of music and Hollywood for a fall campaign centered on its denim lineup, according to a press release shared with sister publication Marketing Dive.
- "Denim on your own” stars Inde Navarrette, the breakout from this year’s horror hit "Obsession," and Malcolm Todd, who provides a cover of the iconic Robyn song “Dancing on My Own.” A music video-inspired ad sees the two dance through cavernous white spaces to Todd’s soft-spoken take on the pop anthem.
- The campaign rolled out Tuesday across Gap's digital and social channels, email, stores and out of home, including billboards in Times Square and on Sunset Boulevard. Paid media elements will run on YouTube, TikTok, Meta and Pinterest and through creator partnerships.
Dive Insight:
With “Denim on your own,” Gap is shoring up a celebrity-heavy campaign formula that blends music and movement with a sense of nostalgia. The retailer emphasized in the announcement its history in championing self-expression through emerging artists. In that regard, it has made a Gen Z coup in Navarrette, the breakout performer from the indie box-office sensation “Obsession,” as well Todd, a singer-songwriter who’s prepping for a sold-out North America tour in support of his latest album, “Do That Again.”
Typical to Gap’s marketing, the effort bridges fondness for the past — in this case, Robyn’s enduring 2010 smash “Dancing on My Own” — with a modern edge. Todd’s rendition of the song was recorded specifically for the campaign and plays a central part in the advertising, which takes its cues from music videos as Navarrette and Todd dance through abstract spaces in flowy GapDenim attire.
Tanu Muiño directed the spot while Gap Head of Creative Calvin Leung handled creative direction. Alastair McKimm led fashion and image duties while Bjorn Loos served as photographer for “Denim on your own,” which is hitting the market during the peak back-to-school season.
Products showcased include Gap’s Mid-Rise Straight Taper Jean, which is sported by Navarrette, and a ’90s Loose Jean worn by Todd. The full fall 2026 collection was designed around fit and versatility and features utility-inspired colorways and updated silhouettes, per the announcement.
“Denim on your own” follows Gap last month teaming with Hailey Bieber on a capsule collection themed around ’90s nostalgia and baggy cuts of jeans. Marketing for “The Hailey Jean” collaboration was soundtracked by “Linger” by The Cranberries, a decade-appropriate touchstone. Prior to that, Gap worked with girl group Katseye on dance-heavy ads set to the 2003 Kelis song “Milkshake.” The Katseye tie-up generated 8 billion media impressions and more than 500 million views across platforms, along with double-digit growth in Gap’s denim category.
Gap’s culture-forward messaging has helped drive fresh relevance for the once-foundering brand among a Gen Z cohort that expresses high fondness for the Y2K mall shopping era while staying glued to social media apps like TikTok. Gap grew comparable sales, an important measure of retailer health, 10% year over year to $796 million in Q1, its 10th consecutive quarter of positive comps performance.
