The Salvation Army drives mobile giving via teen-focused social justice app

The Salvation Army is enhancing its mobile giving initiatives with a donation-enabled mobile application for multiple platforms.

The Salvation Army, Southern Territory, open application store GetJar and Didmo’s Magmito mobile application creation platform have joined forces to inform, educate and engage a global mobile audience about the issues of social justice for teens and young adults. Users can donate to the nonprofit via the Daily Cup application.

“The ultimate purpose of the Daily Cup is to inform the public about issues of social justice and engage interested volunteers and donors in the fight for equality,” said C. Mark Brown, major of community relations and development secretary at The Salvation Army USA Southern Territory, Atlanta. “Within the Daily Cup, users will read startling facts about the prevalence of hunger, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, natural disasters and human trafficking.

“Users will see how The Salvation Army is serving victims across the world and offering hope and a fresh start when all seems lost,” he said. “Finally, interested parties will have the opportunity to participate in outreach efforts in their communities by making a monetary donation, volunteering or simply sharing the Daily Cup with friends and family.

“The Salvation Army in particular will highlight the Daily Cup app on all Web sites and internal publications, and through these outreach efforts, our local public relations professionals will help further spread the word in their communities and engage interested volunteers and donors throughout the southern United States.”

In-app donations
The free Daily Cup mobile app will help address important social justice issues such as hunger, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, human trafficking and natural disasters through building awareness and encouraging donations of both time and money from the younger, mobile demographic.

Mr. Brown said that the Salvation Army is committed to being a voice for the world’s poor and oppressed to speak out against human injustice, and its latest effort to spread this important message is aimed at today’s mobile generation.

Mobile is international, has mass viral appeal and with Magmito, can be accessed by virtually any phone on the market, making it the ideal platform through which to attract young people, whether it is through volunteering their time at a local Salvation Army or making an instant donation of $10 via their mobile device.

The Daily Cup application features a blog feed, regularly updated with news not commonly found on most other media about donations at work globally via The Salvation Army.

In addition, the application highlights important information on social justice including sobering statistics and content on human trafficking, hunger, homelessness, disaster and HIV/AIDS, to name a few.

Participation among those who download is encouraged via a feedback form for volunteer inquiries and donation options including a special “Donate $10 now” button.

Created by Didmo using its cross-platform Magmito mobile application creation software, the Daily Cup will be exclusively distributed via GetJar through premium listings and promotions on their Web site, which has received more than 1 billion downloads in more than 200 countries to millions of mobile users.

The application reaches virtually any phone on the market and resides as an application on all Java, Symbian, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Phone 7 devices.

The Magmito application creation tool also simultaneously creates a mobile Web site so iPhone users and other Internet-enabled devices can access the content and have a similar application-like experience.

How it works
Consumers can download the Daily Cup application by visiting http://m.getjar.com and searching for the application or going to http://getjar.com/Salvation-Army into their mobile Web browser.

Alternatively, you can also click on the “App it! on GetJar” button or scan the custom QR Code with your mobile camera phone.

Users can follow the download instructions that appear on the screen to download the application directly to their phone or, for iPhone users, visit the enhanced Web version of the application.

Potential donors can browse the application to learn about The Salvation Army’s mission and work in the areas of social justice, to volunteer their time at your local Salvation Army or to make a donation.

The Daily Cup mobile application allows users to support Salvation Army programs in a variety of ways.

Donors may call in their donation through 1-800-SAL-Army, visit its international online donation page, use traditional mail or even give $10 through a built-in a text-to-give feature.

“Through the wonders of cutting edge telecommunication technology, making a difference has never been easier,” Mr. Brown said. “The Salvation Army is committed to doing the most good for the poor and oppressed throughout 122 countries worldwide.

“Whether volunteers and donors rally their friends to host a virtual red kettle through the Online Red Kettle program, donate to social justice initiatives within the Daily Cup or simply spread holiday cheer through the purchase of Christmas music, their efforts and the money generated will serve victims of social injustices in the donors’ own communities,” he said.
