Best way to get ahead on Black Friday is mobile, says Walmart, Expedia

If customers want to make the most of this Black Friday and Cyber Monday, mobile is the best way for them to get ahead of the pack on what retailers are offering the right deals, and Walmart and Expedia are leading the charge.

Both brands are rolling out big holiday deals this year as they head into the biggest shopping season of the year. To capitalize on the hectic holiday, both brands are offering deals exclusive to their mobile application users.

“I said it before and I will say it again, we will win the season on price – on Black Friday, on Cyber Monday and every day before and after,” said Steve Bratspies, chief merchandising officer, Walmart U.S. “That means delivering the Black Friday deals we’re known for in stores, online and on our app.

“And, we’ve secured significant availability of these items. We pride ourselves on not being the retailer who advertises a great price and then only has a few available.”

Black Friday
This year, the holiday season is kicking off early with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, two of the biggest days for retailers of the entire year.

The holiday shopping season, and Black Friday in particular, are all about finding the best deals, no matter where they are. Customers are hungry for deals and brands that make them the easiest and simplest to find will reap the rewards.

Both Walmart and Expedia are banking on simple and easy by offering exclusive boosts to holiday shoppers who use their mobile app.

Walmart is letting its app users get a sneak peek at the big deals it will be offering this Black Friday.

Starting yesterday, Walmart app users can access a full list of items that will be on sale on Black Friday through their mobile devices.

Additionally, Walmart is bringing back its popular map feature, also accessed through the mobile app or through Walmart’s mobile Web site, that lets consumers quickly and easily navigate through the store on the crowded day.

Those maps will be invaluable to consumers who want to get their chosen products fast to escape the crowds.

Mobile first
Expedia is taking a slightly different path by offering its mobile app users some exclusive deals.

In addition to the standard deals offered to all Expedia customers, users of the Expedia app will have access to the best deals of all. The travel brand is rolling out coupons for hotel bookings that offer up to 75 percent off on Black Friday and up to 90 on Cyber Monday.

In this way, Expedia is making up for its lack of a brick-and-mortar store for its app to be a companion in, and letting app users get away with some of the best deals of the weekend.

As mobile usage becomes increasingly ubiquitous, retailers both online and off must offer promotions that make use of the unique appeal of mobile as an always-connected channel. Walmart and Expedia are solving that problem in two different, but potentially effective, ways.

“The Dream Island Getaway is the experience of a lifetime, where the winner will be treated to the perfect culmination of beauty, seclusion and extreme relaxation,” said John Morrey, vice president and general manager, Expedia.com. “While there will only be one winner for this trip, the deals Expedia.com will offer on Black Friday and Cyber Monday will give all travelers the chance for a magical escape.”
