Accertify, a leading fraud decisioning provider whose Predictive Yes Platform enables merchants say yes to more good customers, more revenue, and more growth, today released Ahead of the Curve: Fraud-Cyber Convergence in Retail/eCommerce, a new industry analysis examining how retail and ecommerce organizations are responding to increasingly interconnected fraud and cybersecurity threats.
Drawn from Accertify and Liminal’s broader research, The Convergence Dividend: Quantifying What Fraud-Cyber Convergence Actually Delivers, the report analyzes responses from 50 senior retail and ecommerce fraud, risk, security and operations leaders. The findings show that while retail organizations lead the industries studied in fraud performance and fraud-cyber convergence maturity, account takeover and AI-enabled fraud are driving investment beyond the traditional point of transaction and toward earlier stages of the customer lifecycle.
Retail/ecommerce organizations also recorded the strongest overall fraud performance among the five industries studied, including a 98.2% approval rate and 15.9-basis-point fraud chargeback rate, while averaging $169 per fraud investigation, the lowest of any vertical.
Other key findings include:
- Account takeover has emerged as a defining retail threat. Fifty-six percent of retail/ecommerce respondents cite ATO as a top concern, 28 percentage points higher than respondents across the other industries studied. Payment and card-not-present fraud remains the most-cited threat at 60%.
- Retailers are moving fraud controls upstream. While 60% currently identify checkout as their primary point of control, 74% are actively expanding controls into account creation and 64% into account login.
- AI-enabled fraud is accelerating. Eighty-eight percent of retail respondents say AI-enabled fraud has increased in business impact over the past 12 to 24 months, including 36% who say it has increased significantly, the highest rate of any industry studied.
- Retailers increasingly see value in connecting fraud and cybersecurity around ATO. Seventy-two percent say a unified approach to account takeover would provide a meaningful advantage, the highest rate of any industry in the study.
