stormwater runoff. The company has launched its patented contamination reduction system at several major retail locations along the I-5 corridor between Clackamas, OR and Bellingham, WA.
The Retain Drain system consists of a modular stainless steel substructure kit that retrofits inside of existing catch basins. No actual construction or alteration of the existing facilities are necessary. The Retain Drain product simply drops into an existing catch basin and can be assembled and installed in minutes. Monthly maintenance can easily be done by property staff.
The Retain Drain features a lightweight high-flow hydrocarbon filter that has been approved for use by the EPA and the U.S. Navy. The replaceable filter allows for a high-volume of water flow while trapping contamination and light debris before it enters the main stormwater system. Independent testing performed by a local water district demonstrated that the Retain Drain had the ability to take on 450 gallons of water per minute for 5 minutes with a full debris load. The filter is easily replaceable and traps contamination such as hydrocarbons, metals, sediment and debris that otherwise becomes a normal part of stormwater flow.
According to Stormwater Controls Founder and Managing Director Ken Perry, “The quick and easy regularly scheduled maintenance protocol associated with the Retain Drain will allow retailers and other facilities the opportunity to actively commit to bettering the environment.”
The innovative catch basin design flows into a multilevel filtration system and has been engineered to remove contamination and debris that flows downstream from the parking areas. As Perry noted, regular maintenance is the key to keeping the stormwater flow continually clean. The filters can be replaced in a matter of minutes and maintenance service usually takes place in off-hours. This limits interference with normal business activity.
In past months, trial tests conducted at select regional Costco Warehouse locations where the system is installed, the filters trapped on average 10 times their weight in contamination over the course of the normal monthly maintenance period. While regular maintenance doesn’t replace the need for vactor and vault servicing it does have the capability to reduce the cost for those services by as much as 50 percent over a five-year period. Those savings will pay for the cost of the entire Retain Drain system.
“In this day and age, where everyone is well educated about environmental issues, we are anticipating that major retailers, property managers and construction companies will step up and take a lead in environmental responsibility. It is quite simply the right thing to do.” Says Ken Perry, Stormwater Controls founder.
