Dive Brief:
-
Despite growing interest in mobile use by consumers, 68% of retailers say they have no plans to improve their mobile commerce infrastructure heading into the holiday retail season, according to eBay Enterprise’s 2014 Holiday Retail Audit.
-
Just a third of the retailers participating in the study say m-commerce is a pre-holiday investment priority, according to the study, released Monday.
-
EBay Enterprise surveyed more than 1,000 American retailers with revenues between $5 million and $250 million about their priorities ahead of the holidays. Cyber-security remains a concern, with 65% saying they are especially concerned, although 77% had not experienced a breach.
Dive Insight:
Consumers aren't finding it all that easy to research and buy on their mobile devices, and this survey shows that things may not improve for a while. With the holidays approaching, retailers may be caught flat-footed.
It bodes well that cyber-security is top of mind — there are few worse things than a major cyber-breach, as Target (and now Home Depot) has learned. But improvements in m-commerce, while requiring a perhaps difficult and costly series of investments, may need to move up in the priority list soon.
