Amazon rolls out iPad app to expand customer reach
The application features Amazon Whispersync technology, which saves and synchronizes customers’ last page read, bookmarks and notes. The application is also available for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch.
“This app enables the millions of customers who own Kindles to access their Kindle books even when they don’t happen to have their Kindles with them,” said Kinley Campbell, a spokeswoman for Amazon, Seattle.
“For those customers around the world who don’t yet have a Kindle, Kindle for iPad is a great way to instantly access and read the most popular new releases as well as their old favorites,” she said.
Amazon’s Kindle is a portable reading device where consumers can wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines and newspapers. They can read their favorite books through the electronic-paper display.

The application features new releases and New York Times bestsellers, as well as popular classics for free, including “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,” “Pride and Prejudice” and “Treasure Island.”
Consumers can search for specific books or browse by genre or author.
Additionally, users can view customer reviews and leave personalized recommendations and editorial reviews.
Amazon’s Whispersync technology syncs consumers’ last page read and bookmarks, note and highlights it across Kindle, Kindle DX, Kindle for iPhone, Kindle for Mac and Kindle for iPad, letting the user pick up where they left off regardless of the platform they are using.

Consumers can dim the iPad screen within the application and choose from three different background colors and alter the font color and size.
In addition, there is a page turn animation which is designed to replicate the look of a page turning in a book, according to Amazon.
However, users who prefer an unadorned reading experience can choose the basic reading mode option and turn off the animation.
This is not Amazon’s first foray into mobile. Last month, the company introduced its Kindle for BlackBerry application that also featured its Whispersync technology.
“Kindle for iPad is everything that customers love about Kindle for iPhone, now with a beautiful new user interface designed specifically for the iPad,” Ms. Campbell said.
