Editor's Note: Retail Therapy will be taking a break for the next two weeks as our editor, Kelsey Lindsey, goes on vacation. Retail Therapy will be back on June 12.
As the editor of Retail Dive, it’s my job to keep tabs on every piece of retail-related news—the good, the bad, and the silly. From Nasty Gal’s social media blunder to Anthropologie’s dress misfires, below are some of the most interesting reads from the past week.
Devil in a new shoe
A Fortune article recently posed the question: “Can Kanye save Adidas?,” referencing Kanye West’s new line for the athletic apparel retailer. Obviously Fortune hasn’t met West, because according to West, West can do anything.
Dress misfires
In what might come as a “surprise” to some, Anthropologie executives said in a recent conference call that some of its assortment of dresses were “styling misses” with customers in the past quarter. If we may, we would like to float some evidence: This number was retailing for $648. Yikes.
#Awkward
Nasty Gal was quick to praise Taylor Swift for wearing one of its looks on the red carpet of the Billboard Music Awards Sunday. One tiny problem: The jumpsuit wasn’t actually theirs; it was a design from Balmain.
They named a week after us!*
Because the UK doesn’t get the pleasure of Memorial Day sales, May 25-31 is Retail Therapy Week there. Although it holds no relation to Retail Dive, we like to flatter ourselves a little bit by pretending it’s in honor of our weekly column.
*No one named a week after Retail Therapy. Except maybe in our imagination.
The business of likes
A picture is worth a thousand dollars, or sometimes more if you’re a popular fashion blogger on Instagram. Harpers Bazaar looks at the business of bloggers being paid on Instagram by brands to feature their products.
