As an editor of Retail Dive, it’s my job to keep tabs on every piece of retail-related news—the good, the bad, and the silly. From Jeff Bezos' questionably-shaped rocket to a new nude heel, below are some of the most interesting reads from the past week.
The new retail experience: Shop, shoot, bowl, sleep, repeat
The new Bass Pro Shop in Memphis has everything an outdoors enthusiast would want — a shooting range, duck-hunting museum, bowling alley, and an alligator swamp. You know, just for ambiance. As profiled by Bloomberg, the new 535,000 square-foot store even has a hotel bed overlooking the retail floor for those super exhausting shopping days.
Tattoo troubles with Apple Watch
You might regret getting that tattoo of an ex–lover’s name. Well, you might regret it more than the obvious reasons. According to Reuters, some early users of the Apple Watch with inked skin have been having trouble with the device, as tattooed skin apparently interferes with the watch’s heart rate monitor readings.
Jeff Bezos blasts off
Whoever said the sky is the limit never met Jeff Bezos. The e-commerce billionaire’s space company Blue Origin recently had the first successful test flight of its New Shepard space vehicle. Cue dramatic video, inspirational music, and an in-depth discussion about the rocket’s, um, unique shape.
The new nude heel
After pleas from its fashion forward fans, luxury French designer Christian Louboutin has unveiled two new shades in its nude heel collection. A spokesperson from the company told Buzzfeed that the new shades were added to help it reach more women looking for a heel that's the color of their skin.
'Pay What You're Paid'
It’s 2015 and—news flash—women still get paid less than men. In a new pop-up shop, LessThan100, they also pay less than men—24% less than what men are charged, mirroring the wage gap in Pennsylvania where women make 76% of what men earn.
