Dive Brief:
-
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a “Notice of Data Availability” that looks at various materials considered hazardous waste that retailers must take extra precautions to dispose of.
-
Affected materials include nail polish, hair spray, pest control, mouthwash, household cleaners, light bulbs, and pharmacy products.
-
The comment period for the report ends April 15.
Dive Insight:
The EPA’s review could result in new regulations governing the treatment of hazardous waste that can be found at all sizes of retailers. Because retailers have so many outlets, this can be a critical area for them. Meeting the requirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which this notice falls under, has historically been difficult.
